Why Choose Top Notch HVAC Company

Why a Heat Pump Is a Good Choice for Local Homes

Heat pumps move heat instead of burning fuel. They extract heat from outdoor air in winter and reverse to cool in summer. Modern cold-climate air-source models can perform well through Massachusetts winters when they are properly sized and installed, and a hybrid setup that pairs a heat pump with a backup furnace or boiler can add peace of mind on the coldest days.

Top Notch is a life saver - figuratively and literally. I had them come out as a second opinion to another local company that we previously used. The previous company came in and gave a bunch of highly-priced options to "fix" an issue they never even diagnosed. Our gas meter was being replaced unexpectedly, so the other company could not look at anything and instead of coming back later, they guessed on what was wrong based on the system codes that were showing. They basically scared my wife into doing costly repairs, saying the system would break if they didn't fix it. We reached out to Top Notch for that 2nd opinion and they came out right away. The first technician, Vinny, came in very professional and nice, and looked through everything on the system. Nothing stood out that needed repairs and completed a system maintenance and clean up. Vinny checked everything - and upon his review he found that our gas vent pipe (that the previous company installed) had disconnected inside the basement. There was basically carbon monoxide being dumped into our house - who knows for how long. You would think the previous company would have caught this in their diagnoses - but further nailed down that a 2nd opinion was needed. This was extremely dangerous and really thankful that Vinny found this out during his inspection of the system. Goes to show how thorough he was when going through everything. After Vinny left, we still received the system code on our thermostat. We called Top Notch again and they sent someone out right away. This time Aiden came over, who was also very professional and nice. He spent about 2 hours going through everything again and determined that our gas pressure was running high. He adjusted the pressure and went on his way. Top Notch did not charge me for this 2nd visit by their team - which was appreciated. Unfortunately we got the system code on our thermostat once again, and called Top Notch. Once more, they sent someone out right away. This time Sergei arrived and just like the other, was very professional and nice. He went through and saw the gas pressure was still running high and adjusted further. Spent some additional time just checking everything and making sure we were all set. He felt confident that the issue should be set at this point. Since the last visit, we have not had any issues with the system. We really appreciated the effort and time that Top Notch put into the care of our system. And the thoroughness of their inspections really did save us from something that could have been catastrophic with CO2 running into our home. Thank you again Vinny for finding and fixing this. I would not hesitate to use Top Notch on any future work in our house. What we were told were thousands of dollars worth of repairs (or even a new system) that were needed turned out to be a couple hundred dollars worth. We thank Top Notch for everything they did for us.

Vinny and Sean were great. The new furnace installation was efficient, fair price and working well.
Do heat pumps work in a Massachusetts winter?

Yes, when it’s the right equipment, sized right. Mass Save says many of today’s cold-climate heat pumps provide efficient heat at outdoor temperatures as low as -15 degrees F, and that heat pumps perform best in a well-weatherized home with a properly sized system. Mass Save’s air-source rebates also require ENERGY STAR Cold Climate equipment. We do an on-site load calculation before we recommend a size, so the system fits your house instead of a guess.

It depends on how the heat pump will heat your home. If it’s your only heating and cooling, the whole-home rebate is $2,650 per ton. If you keep your boiler or furnace as backup, the partial-home rebate is $1,125 per ton. Both cap at $8,500. Both require a home that’s lived in full time during the winter, and whole-home also requires a weatherized home. Income-qualified households replacing oil, propane, or electric resistance heat can get up to $16,000. Your electric or gas utility has to be a Mass Save sponsor. The installer has to be in Mass Save’s Heat Pump Installer Network, and we’re listed there. The system has to be installed between January 1 and December 31, 2026, and the paperwork is due by February 28, 2027. We’ll tell you which rebate fits your home during the estimate.
Not for a 2026 install. The federal 25C credit covered improvements made through December 31, 2025. If your heat pump went in during 2025 and met the IRS requirements, you may be able to claim it on your 2025 return. For a 2026 project, Mass Save rebates and financing are what to plan around. Our post on the 25C credit explains what changed.
Yes. A hybrid setup pairs a heat pump with your existing furnace or boiler for the coldest days. If you go that route with a Mass Save partial-home rebate, any heating zone that keeps its oil, propane, or gas system needs an integrated control from Mass Save’s approved list, set at or below Mass Save’s maximum switchover temperature.
Usually not the big one. Mass Save says replacing an existing heat pump with a new one isn’t eligible for the whole-home or partial-home rebate. You may still qualify for the basic rebate, which pays $250 per ton up to $2,500. We’ll check which applies before you commit.
Most installs take one to several days, depending on the system type, the number of zones, and any electrical or ductwork changes. You’ll get an estimated timeline with your quote. Equipment availability and permits can move it.
Yes. Our qualified systems come with 0% financing for 5 years. Restrictions apply, so mention it when you schedule.
Yes. Our heating tune-ups check heat pump heating operation and defrost performance, not just furnaces and boilers. You can also enroll in our maintenance plan for predictable annual care and priority scheduling.
That depends on your home, not a rule of thumb. We do a load calculation during the site visit and give you a written summary of the results. Sizing matters for rebates too: Mass Save offers a $500 sizing bonus on partial-home rebates when the heat pumps are sized to meet the home’s total heating needs and the load calculation is submitted with the application.
Yes. We’re based in Medway and install heat pumps across Norfolk County and Metro West, including Medfield, Franklin, Millis, Holliston, and Norfolk. See our full service area for every town we cover.
