Top Notch is a life saver - figuratively and literally. I had them come out as a second opinion to another local company that we previously used. The previous company came in and gave a bunch of highly-priced options to "fix" an issue they never even diagnosed. Our gas meter was being replaced unexpectedly, so the other company could not look at anything and instead of coming back later, they guessed on what was wrong based on the system codes that were showing. They basically scared my wife into doing costly repairs, saying the system would break if they didn't fix it. We reached out to Top Notch for that 2nd opinion and they came out right away. The first technician, Vinny, came in very professional and nice, and looked through everything on the system. Nothing stood out that needed repairs and completed a system maintenance and clean up. Vinny checked everything - and upon his review he found that our gas vent pipe (that the previous company installed) had disconnected inside the basement. There was basically carbon monoxide being dumped into our house - who knows for how long. You would think the previous company would have caught this in their diagnoses - but further nailed down that a 2nd opinion was needed. This was extremely dangerous and really thankful that Vinny found this out during his inspection of the system. Goes to show how thorough he was when going through everything. After Vinny left, we still received the system code on our thermostat. We called Top Notch again and they sent someone out right away. This time Aiden came over, who was also very professional and nice. He spent about 2 hours going through everything again and determined that our gas pressure was running high. He adjusted the pressure and went on his way. Top Notch did not charge me for this 2nd visit by their team - which was appreciated. Unfortunately we got the system code on our thermostat once again, and called Top Notch. Once more, they sent someone out right away. This time Sergei arrived and just like the other, was very professional and nice. He went through and saw the gas pressure was still running high and adjusted further. Spent some additional time just checking everything and making sure we were all set. He felt confident that the issue should be set at this point. Since the last visit, we have not had any issues with the system. We really appreciated the effort and time that Top Notch put into the care of our system. And the thoroughness of their inspections really did save us from something that could have been catastrophic with CO2 running into our home. Thank you again Vinny for finding and fixing this. I would not hesitate to use Top Notch on any future work in our house. What we were told were thousands of dollars worth of repairs (or even a new system) that were needed turned out to be a couple hundred dollars worth. We thank Top Notch for everything they did for us.

Vinny and Sean were great. The new furnace installation was efficient, fair price and working well.
How do I know if my heating system needs repair?

These are the common signs we see in the field. Furnaces have ignition problems, cycle on and off a lot, or heat some rooms and not others. Boilers lose heat, leak, have pressure problems, or bang and rumble. Heat pumps and ductless systems put out weak heat, ice up, or don’t switch properly between heating and cooling. Every job starts with an on-site diagnostic, so you’ll know what’s going on and what comes next before we recommend anything.

Most common home heating systems: gas and oil furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, and ductless mini-splits. We also fix thermostat and control problems, like wrong temperature readings, unresponsive controls, and programming issues that cause comfort swings. If your home heats with oil, our technicians handle oil system maintenance and repairs too.
Yes. We offer 24/7 emergency service, and we schedule same-day service when appointments are available. No heat in freezing weather is an emergency, especially if there are infants, older adults, or anyone with medical needs in the house. A major water leak from a boiler or furnace is urgent too. Shut off the water to the unit if it’s safe, then call us. More on our 24/7 emergency service.
Get everyone out of the house first. If you smell gas, don’t flip switches or use phones inside, and call 911 and your gas utility once you’re outside. If your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, get everyone into fresh air and call 911. Once that’s handled, call us for urgent heating help. To stay ahead of it, test your smoke and CO alarms monthly, and keep a working CO alarm on each level of the home and outside sleeping areas.
Turn the thermostat off and, if it’s safe, shut the system off at the breaker. If there’s a leak, shut off the water supply to the unit if you can do it safely. Don’t try gas valve repairs or internal electrical work yourself. If it’s a gas smell or a CO alarm, skip all of this and get out first.
Weak heat, icing, and parts that don’t switch properly between heating and cooling are common heat pump problems we see in the field. The cause depends on outdoor conditions and how the system is laid out, so we take the time to get the diagnosis right instead of rushing it. Until we get there, keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and gently clear away snow so airflow isn’t blocked.
It depends on what’s wrong, and we don’t lock in a price before we’ve looked. Every visit starts with an on-site diagnostic plus a written estimate, so you know the cost and next steps before any work begins. If parts are needed, we explain your options first. Our technicians aren’t paid on commission, so the recommendation is based on what your system actually needs.
You’ll get an honest recommendation based on what your system actually needs. If a repair makes sense, we’ll fix it. If replacement makes more sense, we offer 0% financing for 5 years on eligible systems. Mass Save no longer offers rebates on new gas, oil or propane furnaces and boilers (income-eligible households are the exception). See our heating installation and replacement page for what that looks like.
Regular tune-ups can help reduce emergency calls, improve efficiency, and extend the life of your heating system. Ask about our custom maintenance plans, which may include priority scheduling, discounted repairs, and seasonal inspections based on your system and your home. Between visits, check your furnace or heat pump filter every 1 to 3 months and keep vents and registers clear. More on our heating maintenance page.
